2009 SEBA Atlanta H.S. Hoop Festival Yellow Jackets sting Stockbridge Gordon names MVP Cobb Civic Center - Marietta, GA Sprayberry's Elijah Hays breaks the Stockbridge press.
Early on it looked as if the Tigers from Stockbridge and their 4SHOT Hoops All-Star Chris Davis were going to be a hand full for Sprayberry to deal with but behind the play of Jason Gordon, PJ Stone and DJ Funderburg the Yellow Jackets stung the Tigers and came away with a scrappy 47-44 win.
Chris Davis scores 2 of his game high 24 on this drive. Davis got off to a good start scoring 10 of the Tigers 14 first-quarter points as Stockbridge took a 14-8 lead. The Tigers appeared to have control of the game; that is up until the last couple of minutes of the half when Sprayberry ran off 6 straight points; 4 by Funderburg to erase a 6 point deficit and take a one-point lead into the half.
Play became very sloppy in the third-quarter as both teams struggled to put points on the point. Davis and Regis Wilbourn both drained three-pointer as Stockbridge regained the lead 33-30.
Gordon and Stone would start to control the glass in the forth quarter of play as the Yellow Jackets surged in front to open up a 6-point lead.
With time becoming a factor in the game Stockbridge turned up their defensive pressure forcing Sprayberry into some unwanted turnovers and fouls. Davis would be the beneficiary of most of those fouls, hitting 6 of 6 free throws to pull the Tigers to with in three with less than 20 seconds left to play.
Stockbridge had one last chance to tie the game but Davis missed a three-point attempt and Sprayberry grabbed the rebound and hold on for a tough three-point victory.
Jason Gordon was named Sprayberry’s MVP of the Game; Chris Davis was named the MVP for Stockbridge.
The Final Score: Sprayberry 47 – Stockbridge 44
Scoring Recap: Sprayberry: Jason Gordon scored 17 to lead the Yellow Jackets. DJ Funderburg finished with 12 and PJ Stone chipped in with 8.
Stockbridge: Chris Davis led all scorers with a game high 24.
